Lido Lago di Caldaro and Gretl am See are the two names you will hear most; Gretl am See runs the only windsurfing school in South Tyrol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of prices as orders of magnitude, because they change from season to season: around 7.50 euros for an adult, around 4 euros for children aged 4 to 14, and around 4.50 euros for the afternoon entry after 5 pm. There is no free public beach in the British sense: swimming is organised through the lidos. And the after-5 pm ticket is the best value of the day, because the sun is still high, the water has been absorbing heat since morning and the lawns empty out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walking round the lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The path around the lake is 7.5 kilometres long and takes about 90 minutes. It is flat, so the challenge is not the walking but the shade \u2014 a hot afternoon is a hot afternoon regardless of the gradient. Early morning or late afternoon changes the experience completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of season, when the lidos are shut, the circuit is the best thing the lake has to offer: reed beds, vineyards running down to the shore and an empty lake. April and October work particularly well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it good for families with young children?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, and this is probably its strongest claim. The water reaches 28 \u00b0C and stays shallow near the shore, so there is none of the cold shock that makes most mountain lakes unusable for small children. An afternoon here does not end after ten minutes with a shivering child on a towel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lidos give you lawn space, food and controlled access to the water. For anyone wanting more than swimming, the windsurfing school at Gretl am See is the only one in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caldaro village, above the lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caldaro is a municipality of 8,161 people, and the village itself does not sit on the lake \u2014 it stands higher up among the vineyards, a short drive away. It is worth the climb for the market square and for Kellerei Kaltern, the village&#8217;s historic winery, with its winecenter and the 1900 wine bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Castelchiaro, a ruined castle above the village<\/li>\n<li>The Mendola funicular, running since 1903, which climbs to 1,363 m<\/li>\n<li>The Valle della Primavera, or Spring Valley, with snowdrops in late winter<\/li>\n<li>Caldaro&#8217;s market square<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funicular is the move to make when the valley is too hot to enjoy: it takes you from the lake at 425 metres up to 1,363 metres on the Mendola ridge, and the air is a different proposition entirely. Opening hours and fares for the funicular, the winery and the wine bar all vary through the year, so check the official websites before setting out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Hermann Hof<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Hermann Hof the lake is on the opposite side of the Adige valley: down from Gleno to the valley floor, across, then a short climb up the other side. It is a half-day rather than an expedition, and it works as a morning outing or as a late-afternoon one using the after-5 pm ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staying in Gleno, the sensible way to use the lake is as the alternative option. When the valley is too hot for walking, the lake is the answer; when the lake is busy, the paths above the house are empty.
